Find Out Why Girls Poo More than Usual When on Their Period and How it Could be Stopped!

A+ A-

During your period, you may have notice that your bowel movements change over the first few days, causing you to poo more or even have diarrhea. According to Shirin Irani, consultant gynaecologist at Spire Parkway Hospital, "The exact reasons aren't fully understood but diarrhea is quite common during your period and is often caused by menstrual cramps. Chemicals call prostaglandins, which are released during periods, are thought to be one cause as they make the uterus and intestine contract. This usually occurs within the first three days of a period,” Shirin added.

The prostaglandin sends chemical signals to the uterus, meaning it tenses and relaxes much more than usual. This contraction is an attempt to push out the lining but these signals also reach your bowels, making them contract too. "Where affected, bowel movement can be worsened by things such as fibroids (muscular tissue lining the womb) pressing on the rectum, pelvic congestion, endometriosis or pelvic infection," says Shirin.

So, is there any way could stop it? Although there's no way to stop it completely, Shirin says there are some things you can do to reduce the symptoms. Along with avoiding spicy foods and staying well hydrated, Shirin recommends eating extra fibre as that will solidify the loose stools and could reduce diarrhea symptoms.
