Who's Your Bet for the 2016 Presidential Election?

The upcoming May 2016 elections are the time wherein we have to choose the country's next president and vice president.

May 9, 2016 is a very important day, especially for these six personalities who are aiming for the presidential seat. We are doing a survey open to everyone to have a grasp of the voters' feelings towards the presidential bets. You may also refer to some facts we have researched about them. Let's get it on!

Rodrigo Duterte


Education: 
He finished Bachelor of Arts in Political Science  at Lyceum of the Philippines University Manila, batch 1968. He graduated with a law degree in 1972 at San Beda College of Law Manila and became a lawyer in the same year.

Major Platform:
Duterte committed to wipe out the problem of illegal drugs and crime in 3 to 6 months. He will also urge to stop the issues with the communist rebels such as NPA-NDF. He is also not in favor of employment contractualization. He will push for extensive income tax reforms covering exemptions among laborers earning 20,000 a month and below.

He is nicknamed as "Digong," born March 28, 1945 in Maasin, Southern Leyte. His wife is Honeylet Avancena and he has four children, namely Sarah Duterte, Paolo Duterte, Sebastian Z. Duterte and Veronica A. Duterte.

Grace Poe



Education:
She finished her degree in Political Science in 1991 at Boston College.

Major Platform:
Poe aims to continue the Conditional Cash Transfer Program (Pantawid Pamilya Program). She will establish an Emergency Management Department to look after issues of climate change and disaster preparedness. She believes in inclusive growth, global competitiveness and open government, hence, will push for the implementation of the Freedom of Information Law.

Personal background: 

Grace is an adopted daughter of Fernando Poe Jr. and Susan Roces. She was born on September 3, 1968  in Jaro, Iloilo City. His husband is Teodoro Misael Llamanzares and has 3 children, namely Brian, Hanna and Nikka.

Mar Roxas II



Education: 
He finished Bachelor of Science in Economics, major in Finance in Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania batch 1979.

Major Platform:
Roxas supports the passage of Bangsamoro Basic Law. He aims to continue the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program. He also plans to improve the disaster risk reduction and management system. He promised to make the government efficient again by pursuing stronger orders and law fighting corruption started by Noynoy Aquino's administration.

Personal background:
Roxas is a grandson of former president, Manuel Roxas. He was born on May 13, 1957 in Manila, Philippines. He has a son named Paolo Roxas, and Mar married the broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez in 2009.

Jejomar Binay



Education:
He finished a degree in Political Science at the University of the Philippines Diliman batch 1962. He got his degree in law from UP College of Law and graduated in 1967 and became a lawyer in 1968. Binay also obtained a master's degree from the University of Sto. Tomas in 1980 and master's degree in National Security Administration at National Defense College of the Philippines.

Major Platform:
Binay would like to amend the 1987 constitution regardless of the economic provisions. He would like to establish a Department of Information Technology. He also aims to reduce personal income taxes. He would like to pass the Fiscal Incentives Rationalization Act and Right-Of-Way Act. His goal is to expedite infrastructure development programs.

Personal background:
Binay was born on November 11, 1942 in Paco, Manila. His wife is named Elenita Binay and has 5 children, namely Nancy Binay, Mar-len Abigail Binay, Jejomar Binay Jr, Marita Angeline Binay and Joanna Marie Blanca Binay.

Miriam Defensor-Santiago



Education:
Santiago graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Visayas with a bachelor's degree in Political Science batch 1965. After that, she studied in several prestigious schools, among them are the University of the Philippines College of Law, where she graduated Bachelor of Law, cum laude; University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she obtained a Masters of Laws and Doctor of Juridical Science; and Maryhill School of Theology  where she finished, Master of Religious Studies.

Major Platform:
She promised to jail those who earned from the Priority Development Assistance Fund scandal. She also committed to sign the Freedom of Information Act as an "important tool to promote public accountability." She aims to increase government efficiency by keeping the economic deficit below 3% of the GDP. She supports Reproductive Health Law and she will push for the full implementation of it.

Senator (1995-2001, 2004-present)

Personal background:
Defensor-Santiago was born on June 15, 1945 in Iloilo City. Her husband's name is Narciso Santiago Jr. And she has 2 sons, namely Narciso Santiago III and Alexander Robert Santiago.
