Why Are Wedding Rings Worn on the Fourth Finger of the Left Hand? FIND OUT HERE!

A+ A-

Wedding rings are one of the most significant parts of the sacred matrimonial ceremony, but have you ever wondered why couples wear the precious symbol of matrimony on the fourth finger – aptly dubbed the ring finger – of the left hand? Apparently, this long-standing tradition has ancient roots.

During antiquity, particularly the ancient Roman and Greek eras, people believed that the vein found in the ring finger on the left hand ran directly to the heart. They called the vein the “vena amoris” which translates to the vein of love due to its hand-to-heart connection. Due to the strong influence that the Roman and Greek cultures have on European cultures, this age-old tradition was adopted by most Western societies. Many couples in Europe, however, choose to wear their wedding rings on their right hand’s ring finger instead.

Meanwhile, there is another ancient Chinese custom that explains why wedding rings are worn on the ring finger. According to the Chinese, every finger has a particular role to portray – the thumb represents your parents, the index finger represents your siblings, the middle finger represents you, the ring finger or the fourth finger represents your life partner, and the little finger represents your children.

The Chinese also provided simple hand movements to demonstrate the symbolism of each finger. A video posted on YouTube explains this in detail. During the latter part of the video, it explained that ring fingers or “life partners” are inseparable as a husband and wife are meant to be together through thick and thin.
