A+ A-

“Not all superheroes wear cape, some of them fly planes.”

This is the untold story of all Filipino crew who miraculously saved the lives of about 273 passengers on board.

On December 1, 1994, an ordinary day to board and fly in and out of the country, Philippine Airlines Flight 434 en route from Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila to Narita International Airport in Tokyo with a stopover at Mactan-Cebu International Airport experienced a bomb explosion on board.

It was reported that Boeing 747-283B was damaged by a bomb planted by Pakistani terrorist Ramzi Yousef who boarded the flight under the fake Italian name Armaldo Forlani. It was said to be a part of the unsuccessful Bojinka terrorist attacks.

After the bomb detonated, the aircraft’s vital control system got slightly damaged. But the all Filipino crew headed by the then 57-years-old veteran pilot Captain Eduardo Reyes was able to maneuver the aircraft and have an emergency landing at Naha Airport at Okinawa.

The successful landing saved the aircraft as well as its 273 passengers and 20 crews. However, one passenger who was seated directly to where the bomb was placed immediately died after the explosion.

Meanwhile, with the help of evidence found in Manila, Yousef who planted the bomb was later on convicted for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
